RCMP Investigating Grandparent Scam
RCMP are investigating multiple complaints involving what’s known as the “grandparent scam” and are warning residents to be on alert.
Arrest Made, Investigation Ongoing
Police have arrested one individual believed to be connected to the scheme, but say more suspects are likely involved. A detailed update will be shared next week as the investigation continues.
How the Scam Works
Victims typically receive a phone call claiming a loved one is in trouble with the courts or law enforcement. Callers often pretend to be a police officer, judge, or family member. They demand payment, most often in cash, but sometimes in gift cards, bitcoin, or e-transfers. In some cases, suspects attempt to arrange meetings at banks to collect the money directly.
RCMP Reminder to the Public
-
Bail is always paid in person at a courthouse or correctional centre
-
Never send money to anyone you don’t know
-
Police officers or judges will never demand cash be picked up or mailed
-
Never give out personal information over the phone or online to strangers
