Meet Bonnyville’s New Community Peace Officer — Sukhchain Khaira

Last Updated: September 19, 2025By

The Town of Bonnyville has a new face in uniform — and no, he’s not here to ticket your truck for backing into a parking stall wrong. His name is Sukhchain Khaira, the newest Community Peace Officer, officially sworn in on August 12.

Following his oath of office, Khaira joined the Public Safety Department alongside longtime CPO Wanda Tomm. Together, they’re tasked with upholding the standards that keep Bonnyville safe, welcoming, and a notch above “North of Expected.”

“As a peace officer, you get to see how the work connects directly with the community,” Khaira explained. “It’s about being present, approachable, and making sure people feel safe.”

That presence is already being felt. Whether it’s enforcing bylaws, checking on traffic safety, or responding to concerns from residents, Khaira knows the uniform comes with trust — and responsibility.

“It’s important that people see us as part of the community, not apart from it,” he said. “This isn’t about writing tickets. It’s about working together with residents so Bonnyville can be the best version of itself.”

The swearing-in ceremony was small, but the ripple effect is big. Bonnyville now has two Peace Officers sharing the workload, and that means more visibility and quicker response for the folks who live here.

CAO Quinton Wintfley summed it up best during the appointment: “Officer Khaira will help uphold community standards and contribute to a safe, welcoming Bonnyville.”

For Khaira, the job is more than bylaws and checklists. It’s about connection. “At the end of the day, we’re all neighbours here. My goal is to keep it that way.”

Next time you see Officer Khaira around town, don’t just check your windshield for a ticket — say hello. Bonnyville’s newest Peace Officer is here to serve, support, and keep the community safe, one conversation at a time.
