RCMP Urge Road and Water Safety for Labour Day Weekend

Published On: August 29, 2025By

The Alberta RCMP are reminding drivers and boaters to play it safe this Labour Day long weekend, as hot weather and heavy traffic are expected across the province.

Last year during the same holiday weekend, officers handed out nearly 1,100 tickets — including 990 for speeding, 35 for distracted driving, 55 for not wearing a seatbelt, and removed 92 impaired drivers from the roads.

“With hot weather expected this long weekend, roads and bodies of water will be busy,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “By following road and water safety tips, we can help ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the weekend safely.”

Road Safety Tips

Police urge motorists to keep these precautions in mind:

  • Never drive tired or impaired

  • Make sure your vehicle and trailer are in good working order and properly connected

  • Leave with plenty of time and don’t rush if you’re running late

  • Keep mobile phones out of reach to avoid distraction

  • Follow posted speed limits and adjust to conditions

  • Ensure all passengers are wearing seatbelts

Water Safety Tips

With lakes and rivers expected to be busy, the RCMP stress the following:

  • Always wear a lifejacket when boating or doing water sports

  • Never operate a boat while tired or impaired

  • Watch for strong currents and know your swimming limits

  • Swim with a buddy, not alone

  • Keep children within sight and reach at all times

  • Have a spotter in the boat when towing water-sport participants
