New Era for Female Hockey: Sydney Chrusch Takes the Helm of the U13 AA Female Panthers
When you talk to Sydney Chrusch, the new head coach of the U13 Female AA Panthers, one thing becomes clear fast: this is more than hockey for her. It’s about building something new for girls in the Lakeland, something she herself once had to chase miles away.
“I’m so excited. This is my first head coach role,” Sydney told me. “I think it’s really cool that we have this female elite program, and that I get to be the head coach of it.”
From Player to Coach
Sydney’s coaching journey started long before the Panthers came calling. At just 12 years old, she laced up alongside her sister’s novice team to collect volunteer hours. She never really left the ice after that.
“I’ve been on the ice coaching summer camps and minor hockey teams ever since. Now to be on the bench with my own team—it feels like a full circle moment.”
Her coaching credentials back up the passion. Sydney holds her Development 1 certification and is trained in High Performance 1, with experience as an associate coach for the Lloydminster AAA Steelers—one of the highest levels of female junior hockey in the country. That team hosted the Esso Cup, the national championship, with Sydney behind the bench.
Why the Panthers Program Matters
For some parents, signing up for a relatively new program might feel like a risk. The Panthers are only in their third year, and wins aren’t always guaranteed. Sydney understands that hesitation, but she also knows what this level of play can do for a young athlete.
“Our practices are an hour and a half long, and we add in video sessions and off-ice workouts every week,” she explained. “Your daughter is going to get hockey IQ, conditioning, and real prep for that next level.”
What struck me most was Sydney’s perspective on development:
“You might not win every game, but what matters is you’re playing with people who have the same mindset as you—and you’re making yourself better.”
As a hockey mom myself, I’ve seen it. My own daughter Vienna grew through this program, even in a tough season on the scoreboard. The skills, the confidence, the drive—it all carried forward. That’s what makes the investment worth it.
The Bigger Picture
Sydney’s presence behind the bench also sends a message. She’s young, credentialed, and she’s walked the same path these girls are on. “Being a young coach that people can look up to—it’s worth it for me as well,” she said.
And for those still wondering if there’s time to join? Tryouts start September 13th, and spots are still open. Registration is through Bonnyville Minor Hockey—just click the Elite tab.
“If nothing else, you’re going to get some good skates that weekend,” Sydney smiled. “And you’ll be ready for your season, wherever that may be.”
This fall, the Panthers aren’t just chasing wins—they’re building a future for female hockey in the Lakeland.
Let’s go Panthers.
