Bonnyville RCMP Issue Safety Reminders During Extreme Heat

Last Updated: August 25, 2025By

As a long stretch of hot weather continues across the Lakeland region, Bonnyville RCMP are urging residents to take extra precautions—both on the road and around the water.

“While enjoying this late blast of summer weather, Bonnyville residents are encouraged to keep these tips in mind to stay safe during this long duration heat event,” said S/Sgt. Parke.

Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles

With temperatures expected to reach the low 30s this week, police stress that leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles—even briefly—can be deadly.

“Seconds count. A parked car can reach dangerous temperatures in minutes.”

RCMP remind residents that:
▪️ There is no safe “short stop”—always take children and pets with you.
▪️ Cracked windows do not prevent vehicles from overheating.
▪️ Watch for signs of heat stroke such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion, or heavy sweating.
▪️ If you see a child or animal in a hot car, call 911 immediately.

Staying Safe on the Water

As summer winds down and families make the most of the lake, RCMP also encourage safe practices on and near the water.

“Extreme heat may encourage extended outdoor activity, but safety should remain the top priority.”

Key reminders include:
▪️ Always wear a life jacket when using any watercraft, regardless of swimming ability.
▪️ Supervise children and inexperienced swimmers at all times.
▪️ Avoid alcohol or substances that impair judgment near water.
▪️ Follow posted safety rules at lakes, rivers, pools, and recreation areas.

Final Word

RCMP emphasize that community safety depends on awareness and preparation. Whether driving, boating, or relaxing outdoors, residents are encouraged to plan ahead, monitor weather alerts, and remind friends and family of the risks.

“This stretch of heat is expected to last for days—please take care of yourself and others,” said S/Sgt. Parke.
