Pedalling for a Purpose: Kilometres for a Cure Returns to Support the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic

Last Updated: August 23, 2025By

When Rene and Thomas clip into their bikes on August 23, they won’t just be riding for the thrill of a 60-kilometre trek from Cold Lake’s Kinosoo Beach to the Bonnyville Hospital. They’ll be pedalling with purpose — raising funds for the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic through the annual Kilometres for a Cure event.

The initiative began in 2020 when Thomas and his neighbour decided to take a simple bike ride and turn it into a fundraiser for local cancer care. Since then, Kilometres for a Cure has raised more than $30,000, and this year marks the fifth ride.

“This will be my second year taking part,” said Thomas. “Rene’s joining for her first ride, and our goal is to keep growing the event so more riders get involved and even more funds go toward the clinic.”

Participants are encouraged to donate and join the ride, though Thomas stresses there’s no minimum. “It’s whatever people are able to give. Every little bit helps, whether it’s riding, donating, or just showing up at the finish line to cheer us on.”

For Rene, the cause is personal. A nurse at the Bonnyville Hospital, she sees firsthand the number of people in the region who rely on the clinic.
“Being born and raised here and now working in the emergency department, I see so many people using these facilities,” she shared. “This money will go a long way in helping our patients and community.”

The 60-kilometre ride will kick off early in the morning to avoid heavy traffic, with support vehicles ensuring the safety of riders along the route.

Funds raised go directly to the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic through the Bonnyville Health Foundation. Donations can be made online, with links provided through the event organizers.

Local businesses have also stepped in to back the cause. Lloyd Sadd Insurance is sponsoring the riders this year.

“Events like this show the power of community,” Thomas said. “It takes riders, donors, volunteers, and businesses working together to make a difference.”

The ride will go ahead weather permitting, “you gotta ride it out.”

To support Kilometres for a Cure, consider joining the ride, cheering at the finish line, or making a donation to the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic. Every kilometre — and every dollar — helps bring hope a little closer to home.
