City tops up Lakeshore Drive project $1.6M
The City of Cold Lake topped up funding for the longstanding Lakeshore Drive project, adding $1.6 million to complete the full scope of the project.
City council agreed after the latest update from administration about the 1B phase of the Lakeshore Drive Infrastructure Improvements at the July 8 regular council meeting.
Multiple change orders have increased the budget, citing additional catch basins, removal of unsuitable material, quantity adjustments and addressing coping beam issues.
Plus, an additional $186,000 for power installation through ATCO.
That brings the total budget to just over $14 million.
“When you’re dealing with a project like that along a side wall you don’t know exactly,” said CAO Kevin Nagoya.
“There could be pockets of things that you don’t see in geotechnical testing and whatnot.”
The coping beam is all the sheet pile work brought to completion, which caused some delay last fall, explained Nagoya.
That pushes timelines finishing the landscaping work that needs to be done back to September, as opposed to the July timeline, said Azum Khan, general manager of Infrastructure Services.
“We have the contractor on board and saying they will be able to complete it this year before snow flies,” said Khan.
City notes indicate that phase 1B of the project was awarded to Knelsen Sand and Gravel in spring 2024 at roughly $12.7 million.
At the time of the construction award, it was anticipated that about $1,400,000 would be transferred from Phase 1A, which was underway with Chandos Construction.
The original intent was to support some of the slipping slope, underground utilities, and to improve the look.
