Town setting aside money to hire a second Community Peace Officer

The Town of Bonnyville is looking to beef up their protective services.

Included in the 2025 Budget is funding for a second Community Peace Officer. While a CPO doesn’t make arrests like an RCMP officer, it does provide another layer of protection and communication with other law enforcement, while supporting current CPO Wanda Tomm.

“We know that crime is an issue here in rural Alberta, so we take community safety very seriously for the Town of Bonnyville,” said councillor Kayla Blanchette on The Morning After.

“Officer Tomm does an amazing job, so we’re just going to add to that team and put a second CPO in place and work toward reducing crime in our area.”

The 2025 Final Budget passed on April 22 with a two per cent residential tax increase and four per cent non-residential increase.

Ratepayers should also be aware of an increase in the School Tax Requisition, which has increased by roughly 3.65 per cent. That is a provincial decision and those taxes are collected by municipalities and then transferred to the province.
