Two men have been charged with drug trafficking and several weapons offences after being stopped by Bonnyville RCMP.

On Feb. 24 during the lunch hour, a member of the Bonnyville RCMP conducted a roadside check with a pickup truck along 66 Street, just south of 50 Avenue.

While police were checking out the driver and occupant, the driver tried to flee.

However, the truck broke down no more than a kilometre down the road.

The member pulled up to the truck and was up to catch the pair, who tried running on foot.

Both males were found to be in possession of a handgun, ammunition, a knife, multiple brass knuckles, crystal meth, suspected fentanyl, hundreds of non illicit tablets, various drug paraphernalia and thousands of dollars in cash.

Derek Drake, 35, of Cold Lake and Andrew Heigh, 33, of Edmonton are both charged with a multitude of weapons offences, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession of Stolen Property and Resisting Arrest.

Drake is additionally charged with Flight from Police, Driving while Prohibited and Driving an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

Bail hearings were held and both males were remanded in custody and are awaiting their first court appearance.
