Community Peace Officer Level 1  

The Town of Bonnyville is looking for an energetic, self-motivated and dynamic person that is  committed to providing a professional level of service, who enjoys working in a Team  environment to fill the role of Community Peace Officer Level 1. Bonnyville is a steady growing  community of approximately 6,500 people located 242 kilometers east of Edmonton and is part  of the oil and gas hub in the Lakeland region. 

Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer or Designate, the C.P.O. Level 1 is  responsible for the day to day enforcement and administration of all municipal bylaws,  specified provincial acts and legislation as well as public inquiries, initiating investigations and  finalizing complaints, issuing violation tickets, laying charges, maintaining files, compiling  records, submitting reports and representing the Town in the Court of Law in accordance with  the Policies and Operational Procedures as approved by the Town of Bonnyville Council as well  as authorities obtained by the Province of Alberta. This position will also have a visible  component to the Educational Program in providing a pro-active style of enforcement through  various youth initiatives and volunteering opportunities within the community. The C.P.O. will  have a good working relationship with the Local RCMP and other public safety/response  agencies. The Community Peace Officer will also have an active role in the Towns Emergency  Management Plan. 

Qualifications/Experience 

  • Post- Secondary education in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related discipline,  supplemented by at least 5 years of previous law enforcement experience as a  Community Peace Officer 1 (or equivalent)  
  • Must meet all requirements of Alberta Solicitor General Department to obtain a Level  One Community Peace Officer appointment 
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s license (Minimum Class 5) 
  • Hold or qualify for the Enhanced Reliability RCMP Security Clearance 
  • Applicants must have successfully completed an approved Physical Abilities  Requirement Evaluation (PARE), with a time of four minutes and 45 seconds (4:45) or  less, within the last six (6) calendar months/ other equivalencies will be accepted as per  the Peace Officer Program 
  • Previous experience in By-Law enforcement, commercial Vehicle Enforcement and/ or  animal control

  • EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) or equivalent  
  • Previous experience and training with PPCT, Baton/ OC spray and radar/laser is  mandatory 
  • First Aid/CPR is an asset 
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office 
  • Experience with JOIN/ Incident Report Systems and Report Exec 
  • ICS training is preferred/ mandatory completion after employment 

The ideal candidate must demonstrate sound judgment, combined with a strong sense of ethics  and the ability to handle sensitive or private information. The candidate must possess excellent  written and oral communication skills, as well as outstanding public relations and problem solving skills. 

This position is based on a 40-hour work week, Tuesday through Saturday, with some  evening/off-day callouts and other duties as assigned.
