Lac La Biche RCMP Arrest Suspect Following Violent Altercation

A routine call for police assistance in Lac La Biche took a violent turn when officers arrived to remove an individual from a residence—only to discover they were the victim of a stabbing. The suspect attempted to flee and later fought police during the arrest, injuring multiple officers before being taken into custody.

On January 29, 2025, at approximately 9:08 p.m., Lac La Biche RCMP responded to a call requesting the removal of an individual from a residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the individual in question was actually the victim of a stabbing.

Entering the residence, police located the suspect, who attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. During the arrest, the suspect became aggressive, punching, kicking, and biting officers while attempting to disarm them. Despite the violent struggle, officers successfully took the suspect into custody with the assistance of a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). Multiple officers sustained injuries in the altercation and received medical treatment on-site.

As a result, Lac La Biche RCMP arrested Luke Cardinal, a 19-year-old resident of Kikino, Alta., who now faces several charges, including:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault on police causing bodily harm
  • Assault on police
  • Attempt to disarm a police officer (x2)
  • Resist peace officer
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Fail to comply with court order (x2)

Following his arrest, Cardinal was brought before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. His most recent court appearance was on February 3, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lac La Biche.
