New lodge project jumps federal hurdle to build $50M senior’s housing unit
St. Paul’s bid for a new seniors housing facility to replace Sunnyside Manor is progressing.
The Town of St. Paul, Elk Point, County of St. Paul, and M.D. of St. Paul Foundation received positive news in November that they have received a conditional funding grant from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
“For us to have received that is truly a huge step in the right direction,” said St. Paul Mayor Maureen Miller on The Morning After.
The project involves the demolition of the currently existing cottages in order to build 90 brand new units. This is to make some of the units more spacious and with added outdoor access.
In turn, it’s hoped they can have all the units desirable to rent.
Totalling a cost in the $50 million range, the Town had submitted approvals in last year’s round of provincial grant funding. They were unsuccessful at that time due to limited funding, but are hopeful the federal approvals will change the outcome this go-round.
Each municipality splits the $4 million upfront capital costs for the lodge project.
“We all have skin in the game, and we’ve already signed off all those contracts to get that happening,” Miller said.
“We’re kind of still all maneuvering all of the funds, which happens when you look at a large build of $50 million anyway. But we’re close, and I really hope that we actually fit into the funding model this year for the provincial government.”
