Residents pitch City idea of crosswalk commemorating CAF and fallen veterans

The crosswalk design in Cochrane, Alberta, which has grown in popularity throughout Canada in recent weeks and months.

City council will discuss the possibility of having a commemorative crosswalk in Cold Lake in honour of Canadian Armed Forces veterans.

Rich Kotowicz, Audrey Cote, and Michael Williams submitted a brief delegation to council to pitch the idea, who are veterans, or involved with the Cold Lake Legion.

The idea is inspired by a design in Cochrane and is rapidly gaining steam in communities across Canada, to remember the sacrifices of our military.

“We are here collectively to present proposals that has gained traction across Canada and cities such as Cochrane, Calgary, Hamilton, Chatham, Langford, just to name a few, to honour the military community and our veterans,” said Kotowicz to council.

“As as we might be aware, northern Cold Lake is presently under extensive renovations and upgrades, and the present sidewalk from the Legion to the Cenotaph is in the scope of these needed repairs,” he continued.

“We are here to request a design of the crosswalk to be modified to accommodate the recognition of veterans and fallen military members of our community. We are looking for your consideration and approval to this valued awareness.”

The item can be first be discussed at next Tuesday’s council meeting.

“We’ve also had somebody else inquire about the Cenotaph just the other day. I think more and more of the residents are seeing its importance,” said Mayor Craig Copeland after the presentation.
