Published On: November 21, 2024By

St. Paul RCMP have released a series of tips meant to remind hunters of safe practices during the hunting season.

Keeping responsibility and security top of mind, can also alleviate potential issues with other outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Whether in transit or in the field, all firearms should be secured at all times.
  • Inspect and check you hunting equipment before heading out to make sure it is in safe working order.
  • Store firearms in a locked case or secure them with a trigger lock when not in use.
  • Ensuring that your firearm is unloaded when not in use and during transportation.
  • Never leave firearms unattended in vehicles or public places, even momentarily. Properly secure them to avoid any risk of theft or misuse.
  • Avoid high-traffic areas and clearly marked trails where non-hunters may also be enjoying the outdoors.
  • Wear bright or high-visibility clothing, ideally in orange or another standout color, to ensure you’re visible to others.
  • Checking that you have the necessary licenses, tags, and permits.
  • Respecting any designated zones and protected wildlife areas.
  • Follow all hunting season start and end dates as set by local authorities.
  • Ensuring that your firearm is unloaded when not in use and during transportation.
  • Be Prepared for Emergencies. Carry a first aid kit, a fully charged phone, or a communication device and always inform someone of your hunting location
