It was another successful Scott MacDonald Memorial, with people of all ages choosing to shave their heads, and raising money towards local health and scholarship programs.

The 15th edition of the fundraiser in memory of former Voyageur Scott MacDonald who passed away to cancer was well attended, with the bleachers and parking lots busy.

With $2410 raised from head shaving donations, and another $4860.50 raised from the silent auction items donated from local businesses, a total of $7270.50 was raised for the Scott MacDonald fund.

Patrons could also participate in the 50/50 draw, eat a Mr. Mike’s burger, or just spectate with the local football action.

The money raised over the years has gone to the Bonnyville Healthcare Centre, Haying in the 30s Cancer Support Society based in Mallaig, individual families, and Bonnyville Amateur Football Association scholarship opportunities.

This year, the organization is planning on doing baskets for families that a child undergoing cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The weather was perfect for a fall day of football, which was a triple header between the peewee Bonnyville Renegades vs the Cold Lake Rams, the bantams in the Bonnyville Bandits vs the St. Paul Bengals, and the high school clubs in the Bonnyville Voyageurs vs the St. Paul Lions.

In an absolute boat race to start the day, the Renegades and Rams traded scores, leading to a 66-42 Bonnyville victory.

The see-saw swung in St. Paul’s favour in the next contest, with a strong 40-24 victory with keys plays down the stretch to secure the win.

In the Voyageurs first Wheatland Football League game, Bonnyville was overmatched. The Lions defence snuffed out much of the Voyageurs offense, while St. Paul’s size and running ability led them to a 29-3 road win.

The Lions are now 2-0 in the league play after a 18-1 win at home vs the Cold Lake Royals.

The Wheatland League is now down to four teams, with Holy Rosary hanging around as well. The regular season will determine seedings and home field advantages in the playoffs, and also determine Provincial rankings.

On Friday, the Voyageurs are slated to head down the highway to face the Cold Lake Royals. The St. Paul Lions host the Holy Rosary Raiders in a rematch of last year’s league final, where St. Paul upset the favoured Lloydminster club.
