A sodturning was held on Monday in Frog Lake ahead of the build of a new skate park and splash park for the community.

Tribal Chief Child and Family Services EAST Society board has been working to build recreation outlets for the youth in local First Nations communities.

An announcement was made back in July to begin Kehewin’s two parks, while Frog Lake’s will now get underway.

“First of all, I’m thankful for today and for the collaboration between Tribal Chief Child and Family Services EAST Society board and staff as well as Indigenous Services Canada on bringing this project to reality for our youth. The skate park and the splash park are long overdue, but are very welcomed to the infrastructure on the Frog Lake First Nation,” said Chief Greg Desjarlais.

“Today is about the children, the youth and unborn as they are the future of our nation. These two projects will allow them to enjoy themselves right on the nation. Once again, I want to thank each and everyone of you who had a part in making this a reality.”

These parks will be located across from the school and community centre with construction starting next week and hoping to be done in October.

Meanwhile, Kehewin’s skatepark will be completed this Thursday, with the splash park to begin next week.
