For those night shift workers, high schoolers, or anyone who wants to stay fit or get swoll — Glendon is now home to a unique recreational feature for a village.

The brand new gym Fire and Iron Fitness is officially open, 24 hours a day. Located on Main Street, the weight room is open for members over the age of 12.

Funded and ran by the Village of the Glendon, it’s been a long process to get to this point.

“We wanted to make a splash. We received feedback on our community survey, and after water, recreation was number one. We hope it’s a hub for the community and improve our resident’s physical and mental health,” said Mayor Nicholas Werstiuk.

“Small towns like Glendon, our dollar goes farther because we have such great volunteers. There has been thousands of hours of volunteer time that has gone into this and it’s because we have such a great community. Our volunteers are amazing.”

Several months of work in the buildings was needed in order to get to this point. Moving through the steps of the feasibility study, council mulled over the pricetag, over $900,000, and decided to pull the trigger.

The grand opening of the facility happened on Wednesday, and already memberships are being purchased. The key feature is the fob, that allows a user to go whenever they desire, while keeping the building safe-guarded.

Equipped with modern exercise gear, the facility includes a studio space, lockers, bathroom and shower facilities, lockers and free wi-fi.

The opportunity for rural M.D. residents to access this space, instead of driving to Bonnyville or St. Paul, in a plus, council believes and helps accommodate residents where they live.

This is evidenced by the several tours that have been done for curious residents, something that’s available for the curious before they plunge into a membership.

“It was time for a shake up,” said Deputy Mayor Daryn Galatiuk. “We have a great community, but to do something like this just enhances it even more.”

Memberships can be purchased from the Village office and range in drop-in usage, to three month passes, to a year pass. The prices then aggregate based on these situations.

Those aged 12-15 have to be supervised with an adult with a paid membership.
