The Glendon Demolition Derby’s reputation is growing.
After having the largest number of participants they’ve seen at last year’s event, and that is one of the fastest growing derby events in western Canada, this weekend’s event hopes to keep that momentum going.
Word has spread. Through connections in the derby world, some participants are coming up from the US to take part in the event.
“Word of mouth,” said Glendon Ag Society president Ken Pshyk about the event’s popularity. “A lot of our own Glendon people travel to do the derbies themselves, they’re doing a great job of promoting this. Word gets around.”
Much preparation goes on at the derby ground just north of Glendon in the lead-up thanks to the various volunteers and Ag Society board.
There is more created for the participants, roughly tripled from year’s past, as well as added safety measures. Space between the announcer’s tower and the ring has been increased, after a truck nearly got thrown from the ring last year.
Plus, with the anticipated number of participants, the driver auction portion will not be live this year, in order to get the show rolling at 1:00PM on Saturday afternoon.
Spacing out the derby runs are lawnmower races, put on Dynamo Small Engine Sales & Service.
The day’s activities:
- Pancake Breakfast – 8:00AM
- Parade (downtown Glendon) – 10:00AM
- Firefighter’s BBQ – following parade
- Grounds Open/Auction Begins – 11:00AM
- Derby Begins – 1:00PM
- Dance – following derby events
