Kendelstick Park favoured as Dog Park location, no decisions made

Mayor Maureen Miller says St. Paul council will go through the feedback before making any decisions on where to put a new dog park, what the rules will be, and how they’re enforced.

The Dog Park Open House on July 9 saw feedback from residents on two proposed locations at Kendelstick Park and Elks Park.

One thing is clear, residents want a Dog Park.

“There was more people than I actually anticipated,” said Mayor Maureen Miller on The Morning After. “We wanna make sure we get it right the first time.

“We got feedback. That information has been collected, and it’s actually gonna come back to council at our next council meeting for a next step.”

Council notes from the July 22 meeting had the feedback compiled in a report from Colliers.

Of the two options, Kendelstick Park was favoured as the better location. The online portion of the survey had 173 respondents, with 16 sign-ins in person and 25 who walked in as well.

But locations though had reasons for and against.

“The comments reflect a divided community sentiment regarding the proposed dog park in St. Paul. Supporters emphasize the park’s overdue necessity, potential benefits for socializing pets and owners, and the enhancement of community value. They argue for modernization and the need for such facilities in the town,” the report reads.

“Conversely, opponents express concerns about funding priorities, responsible pet ownership issues, maintenance challenges, and alternative uses for allocated funds, such as road repairs. There are also logistical concerns raised, such as vaccination enforcement, cleanliness, and the practicality of implementing and maintaining rules within the park.”

The full collected feedback can be read here.
