Divers pull over 2,000 pounds of tires, engines, out of Cold Lake

Just some of the materials pulled from Sunday’s underwater removal.

Over 2000 pounds of debris was removed from Cold Lake on Sunday.

In fact, the total reached 930 kilos or 2046 pounds of debris, including 23 tires, two truck engines, truck differential, a child’s scooter, a large commercial fishing engine sprocket, and many other miscellaneous items.

Diving for Hunger, the Beach and Underwater Cleanup event, saw certified divers from as far as Wainwright, Fort McMurray, and Edmonton, help out the effort to clean up the lake. Situated east of the current marina, this spot was an old boat launch area.

The Cold Lake Food Bank ran a barbeque fundraiser during lunch hours while the divers were at work.

Dunnill’s Diving Services spearheaded the event and hope to make it an annual effort.

“Hopefully with an event like this, we can bring awareness to it. Cold Lake has stayed fairly healthy, but we’re just doing a small area, right? Once we get to the breakwater, even with our recreational dives, we see a lot of different trash and stuff along there,” said Konrad Moyer.

MLA Scott Cyr visited the dive area in the early afternoon.
