Entrepreneurial Spirit thrives with SMARTstart Program

The Lakeland community is buzzing with entrepreneurial excitement as the SMARTstart program continues to support and nurture local business talent. Designed to guide and mentor new entrepreneurs, the program offers a comprehensive timeline of workshops and online learning opportunities from October 2023 to June 2024.

The program is run under Community Futures Lakeland and facilitated by Lisa Ford. It features a combination of in-person workshops and online business training. Over the eight-month course, participants receive approximately 50-60 hours of training.

At the graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, Ford said it is vital for local communities to support small business growth and development. “When our local small business community thrives, we all see the benefits. Small businesses provide jobs, give back through sponsorships, and volunteer their time to create this wonderful community we live in.”

Also speaking at the ceremony, Corey Dows, Executive Director of Community Futures Lakeland, emphasized the program’s impact: “SMARTstart is a fantastic initiative that empowers our local entrepreneurs. It’s wonderful to see the community come together to support and grow our local economy.”

The program, which began accepting applications in July 2023, includes information sessions and a thorough selection process and culminates in a celebration event on June 19, 2024. Participants benefit from hands-on workshops and mentorship from experienced business owners, fostering a supportive environment for growth and innovation.

“We’re thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation,” Dows added. “Programs like SMARTstart are vital in helping our community members realize their business dreams.”

This year, 23 local entrepreneurs, 12 participants, and 11 mentors participated in the program, which was supported by 26 local businesses, including guest speakers, workshops, event venues, and caterers.
