Police says alcohol and drugs could’ve played a factor.

Two people are dead following a fatal collision on Highway 28 early Tuesday morning.

Smoky Lake RCMP were called to the scene at Highway 28 and Range Road 130 in the County of Smoky Lake at 12:45AM on Tuesday morning.

A release sent out at 8:54AM from the RCMP says early indications suggest that a SUV, driving at a high rate of speed on Range Road 130, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a sedan that was travelling east on Highway 28.

The driver of the sedan, a 39-year-old female resident of Cold Lake, was pronounced deceased on scene. The passenger, a 36-year-old male resident of Meadow Lake, was transported to the hospital by STARS, and later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the SUV was brought to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, while the two passengers were transported with varying levels of injuries.

RCMP say alcohol or drugs are suspected to be a factor in the collision.

The matter is still under investigation and a release is anticipated once more information becomes available, police said.
