Uttering threat, impaired driving, and arson: Bonnyville RCMP reports May 17-24

Bonnyville RCMP were involved in 165 investigations from May 17-24.

Threats uttered during attempted break-in

On May 17th at 1:30AM, Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a residence on the 4800 block of 49 Ave as a male was attempting to break into the home.

During his attempt to break in the male was yelling death threats to the residents inside. The suspect damaged the door and smashed windows of the house before leaving.  RCMP located him nearby and he was arrested.

During his arrest he threatened to kill the two RCMP members. Calo Berland, 20, of Bonnyville is charged with four counts of Uttering Threats, two counts of Mischief Under $5000 and one count of Disobeying a Court Order.

He was brought before a Justice of the Peace and despite Berland’s breaching a Court Order in the commission of these new charges, he was released from police custody and is set to appear in Court on June 18th.

Impaired driving at Sportsman

On May 17th at 9:45PM the Bonnyville RCMP received two separate calls for a pickup truck that was driving around the Sportsman Trailer Park running into different trailers, and narrowly missing pedestrians.

Members attended and located the male they identified as the driver of the truck and he was believed to be impaired, but the male refused to provide a breath sample.

Barrydene Pasos, 55, of Bonnyville was arrested and charged with Driving Impaired, Refusing to Comply with a Breath Demand, Dangerous Operation of a Vehicle, and three counts of Failing to Stop at the scene of an Accident, plus driving an uninsured vehicle.

He was brought before a Justice of the Peace for a bail hearing and was released to appear in court on June 4th.

Additionally, May 18th was National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day across the country. The Bonnyville RCMP did their part that day and check stopped drivers. In 24 hours, members made contact with 74 vehicles/drivers over five checkstops and issued Impaired Driving Provincial Sanctions to three drivers and issued one Criminal Code Impaired Driving charge.

Arson

On May 20th Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a residence in Kehewin where a male had set his house on fire.

The Kehewin Fire Department was on scene and put out the fire saving the structure that has extensive smoke damage.

Dennis Watchmaker, 49, of Kehewin is charged with Arson.  He was released by a Justice of the Peace and is set to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on June 18th.
