Vermilion town council has unanimously decided to sanction its mayor.

Following a special council meeting on April 30, sanctions have put on Greg Throndson that will “significantly limit the roles and responsibilities” for the remainder of his elected term.

In a press release, the Town said: “These sanctions reaffirm the Town’s commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of its organization and residents. We are dedicated to upholding the values of justice, fairness, and accountability. The actions taken at the April 30 meeting are a testament to the commitment of maintaining the integrity of our community.”

This is Throndson’s first term as Mayor, elected in 2021. The Town did not say what these sanctions included.

Throndson was found to have violated Code of Conduct stemming from a March 2023 incident where he kicked a door which then stopped working.

Meanwhile, the Town has appointed a new interim chief administrative officer.

CAO Kevin Lucas sent a letter of resignation to council. Director of Community Services Michael van der Torre will fill in during this time.
