Road Race Relay Championship in St. Paul sees students connect with RCMP
The St. Paul Recreation will act as the finish line where spectators can gather to see the conclusion of this year’s Road Race.
Motorists travelling near St. Paul area highways should be aware of an annual event taking place today that engages students with RCMP.
The 42nd annual RCMP Road Race put on by the St. Paul RCMP and Victim Services will see several schools from across the Lakeland compete in a relay, starting on highway and leading into town.
Police organize the event to promote physical wellness and engage youth with community policing initiatives.
“As an organization, it is vital that connections are formed with youth so that they know that they can approach Members of the RCMP when they are needed,” said Sgt. Bobby Burgess, St. Paul RCMP.
“This is an event that means a lot to the St. Paul Detachment along with the communities that we serve.”
At around 10:00am, junior and senior high students will kick off the relay west of St. Brides, continuing east along Highway 29, and into St. Paul.
Members from each relay team will be running a length of one mile before handing off to their teammates, before arriving at the finish line at the St. Paul Recreation Centre.
RCMP ask motorists to be cautious and vigilant as students will be running along the south shoulder of Highway 29.
“St. Paul RCMP will be present throughout the event alongside our partners from other public safety agencies to monitor traffic and ensure the safety of all our participants. Race rules explicitly prohibit coaches, spectators, parents, or fans from driving alongside runners and only authorized vehicles and personnel will be permitted to park south of the highway. All rules of the road must be obeyed and all applicable legislation will remain in effect.”
