Assumption student invited to prestigious math workshop at University of Waterloo

A Grade 11 student at Assumption Jr/Sr. High School is using his math proficiency to earn an invite to a prestigious workshop at his dream university.

Edison Wang is going to the 2024 Lloyd Auckland Invitational Workshop, hosted by University of Waterloo, the university he hopes to attend once he completes high school.

Only 70 of the country’s brightest math minds get the chance to attend.

“I’m very excited. The opportunity to go and explore the campus, meet new people with similar interest, and work with others throughout the workshop is incredible,” he said in a Lakeland Catholic School Division press release.

To get the opportunity, “Eddie” Wang had to write the Fermat test, a 25 question multiple choice and number response test, that stresses logical thinking and mathematical problem-solving.

This workshop aligns with Wang’s future career goals in computer engineering or artificial intelligence.

At home, Wang is a member of Assumption’s mathematics team. They were Zone Team Champions in the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest held by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at Waterloo University.

“We are thrilled for Edison and this opportunity to participate in the Waterloo University Mathematics Workshop. Edison works hard to continually improve his mathematics skills and is well-deserving of this recognition,” said AJSH principal Elaine Ernst in a press release.

“Being one of only 70 students from across the country chosen to participate is a remarkable achievement and we are very proud of Edison. We know he will be an amazing representative of our school and community and we can’t wait to see what he does in the future.”
