Over 500 speeding tickets handed in 2023 in Bonnyville area, as Sgt. warns of dangers

Last year in Alberta, there were over 60,000 speeding tickets handed out in Alberta, with 761 instances of excessive speeding, which is travelling 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit.

Bonnyville RCMP is reminding motorists as the weather gets warmer, that it isn’t license to speed.

In the Bonnyville detachment area, over 500 speeding tickets were handed out to 2023.

April tends to be the month where the most speeding infractions occur.

Particularly on highways and rural roads, Bonnyville RCMP Sgt. Sarah Parke says livestock and wildlife, unmarked intersections and blind curves, as well as varying and sometimes poor surfaces, can create enough problems.

“Our rural roadways have enough potential hazards without adding the dangers involved with speeding,” Parke said.

To avoid speeding, the RCMP recommends giving yourself enough travel time, limiting distractions while driving, and being aware of posted limits in playground and construction zones.

Speed limits

Unless otherwise posted, the following speed limits apply in Alberta:

  • 100 km/h on a provincial highway located outside an urban area.
  • 80 km/h on a provincial highway located inside a corporate limit of a city.
  • 80 km/h on a roadway that is located outside an urban area.
  • 50 km/h on a roadway that is located within an urban area, unless otherwise posted.
