Over 500 grams of cocaine, drugs, seized by RCMP as trafficking charges laid

And they could’ve gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for that darn littering.

Vermilion RCMP apprehended two people after being found with over 500 grams of cocaine on Sunday evening.

The situation all started with a routine traffic stop after a vehicle on Highway 16 driving in the Minburn area littered at around 6:00pm on Sunday.

RCMP discovered the driver did not have a license, and when searching the vehicle, police found a “significant” amount of drugs, including over 500 grams of cocaine.

Both were arrested, held for hearings, but ended up released.

“Excellent work by the members involved to transition from what was a simple provincial offence, into a significant drug investigation,” said Sgt. Corey Buckingham, Vermilion Detachment Commander.

Charges

Penny McCoy, 38, a resident of Lloydminster, was charged with:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Possession of crack cocaine; and
  • Possession of methamphetamine.

 Kevin Kahmahkotayo, 28, a resident of North Battleford, Sask., was charged with:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Possession of crack cocaine;
  • Possession of methamphetamine; and
  • Fail to hold a valid operating licence.

McCoy is set to appear next on April 22, 2024, while Kahmahkotayo is set to appear next on May 6, 2024, both at Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion.

“Not only are traffic stops effective at increasing police visibility and reducing aggressive driving, but they can also result in unexpected outcomes such as this,” said Sgt. Corey Buckingham, Vermilion Detachment Commander.
