Weiss shines in dominant performance for Yaks 4-1 win
It might have been a theft of two points, but the Pontiacs will take it.
Bodee Weiss had perhaps his most dominant start of his three year junior career. Save after save after save — some all alone, some quick one-timers, some low in the pads — 43 were needed in order for the Pontiacs to beat the Grande Prairie Storm 4-1 on Saturday night.
Languishing off the start with an 11-0 shot advantage for GP to begin, the Yaks top line flipped the script. Luka Sukovic converted on an outstretched Nicholas Jones, who earned second best goalie of the night for his 1st period.
Caught for icing the next shift, Bonnyville was punished. The lone shot to beat Weiss was a re-direct by Zachary Wilson to knot it up.
Billy Batten’s eight goal of the season gave Bonnyville the lead again just 1:33 later, one they’d never relinquish.
Overall, the performance was largely a carryover from the night before, where the Pontiacs were beaten 4-1 to the hands of the Whitecourt Wolverines.
But they were playing a more offensively inferior team, and were more opportunistic in their chance conversions.
The will lacked in Whitecourt, and although they were tied 1-1 in the 2nd period, the mistakes proved too costly.
What is clearly established is the Pontiacs have two really good goaltenders.
Hagen too had a tremendous 1st period in Whitecourt, giving the Yaks a chance to settle into the intermission.
Weiss and Hagen represent a major league duo in terms of the Pontiacs long-term hopes in the AJHL playoffs, one they have to feel they could beat anyone in.
The Pontiacs have just four more games left in their regular season, back at it on Saturday night in Drumheller.
