Some slight increases should be expected for Bonnyville residents in terms of utility and garbage costs.

At last Tuesday’s council meeting, four per cent increases were given to utility service fees and the collection and removal and disposal of garbage.

This equates to a total of $13.67 per month and consumption fee at $2.75 per cubic metre, and the garbage fee sitting at $13.96 per month and the extra cart fee at $10.06.

“The increase you will see is a four per cent increase on your garbage and water consumption to areas that, again, the costs for the town have been continuing to go up and up and up with inflation,” said Deputy Mayor Neil Langridge.

“We’re looking for new and creative ways to not download all the inflation that the town sees on to our citizens.

“We want to make sure that we keep the services that we’re providing at the highest level possible. We don’t want to start cutting services at any time, so we felt this was a fair increase. When you look at it, I think it works out to under $1 a month, so very minimal. But at the same time we’re doing we have to make sure we position the town for success going forward.”

In the interim budget, Bonnyville council agreed to a general two per cent tax increase.
