The Bonnyville RCMP dealt with 157 investigations between January 5-12.

On January 9th at 10:30pm Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to an apartment complex on the 4500 block of 43 Street to deal with an unknown male in the hallway screaming and banging his head on the walls. Members arrived on scene to find the 36 year old Bonnyville resident was intoxicated by drugs.

He was arrested for Mischief and lodged in cells until sober at which time he was released with a violation ticket under the Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Act in the amount of $120.

Just after midnight on January 10th, a member of the Bonnyville RCMP was conducting patrols in the Beau Vista area when he came across an SUV that police were on the lookout for as it had been stolen from Cold Lake just hours prior.

The stolen vehicle was parked on the side of the road facing the wrong way and had two occupants inside. As the member nosed up to it, police say, he activated his emergency equipment which prompted the female behind the wheel to attempt to escape. She accelerated in reverse smashing into the parked truck immediately behind her then she moved forward toward the police vehicle. Extensive damage was sustained to the parked civilian truck.

She eventually stopped trying to flee and both she and the male passenger were taken into custody by way of a high risk takedown with the assistance of back up members who had arrived on scene.

Summer Janvier, 18, of Cold Lake is charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Resisting Arrest, Assaulting a Police Officer with a Weapon, Mischief Over $5000, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Failing to Comply with an Undertaking Condition. Kelly Janvier, 49, of Cold Lake First Nations was also arrested and charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000 and Resisting Arrest.

Both were released by a Justice of the Peace without cash and are set to appear in court on February 20th.

Tips for Driving and Walking in the Cold

As we enter a new year, RCMP encourage all roadway users to maintain safe habits. Intersections are high-traffic areas that require motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to exercise caution and maintain Right of Way rules.

Drivers:
• Slow down as you approach an intersection, stop and check all traffic before proceeding.
• Obey traffic signs and signals. Make a full stop at red lights and stop signs, even when turning right.
• At a four-way stop, remember the Right of Way rule. You must yield to the vehicle on your right.
• Leave ample room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front. It might stop unexpectedly.
• Use your signal when making turns. Ensure it is safe to turn left before doing so.
• Pedestrians have the right of way in all marked and unmarked crosswalks. Pay attention to pedestrians crossing when making any turns or at an all-way stop.
• Be prepared for the unexpected. Always look for pedestrians, changing lights, slippery road conditions and other drivers before proceeding through an intersection.
• Don’t try to speed up on a yellow light. A yellow light means slow down and prepare to stop.

Pedestrians:
• Never jaywalk. Check traffic before crossing and only proceed when it is safe to do so.
• Always use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals when they are available.
• Don’t be a distracted pedestrian. Remove headphones; put away cell phones or other electronic devices when crossing the street.
• Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
