U17 Storm win silver as four Lakeland teams fought for Softball Provincial championships

Four teams from the Lakeland area made it to Alberta Softball Provincials this past weekend. 

On Friday, the U13 C Bonnyville Angels, U17 C Bonnyville Angels, U15 C St. Paul Storm and U17 C St. Paul Storm teams went their separate ways to play for the title of Alberta Softball Provincial Champions. 

The Town of St. Paul hosted provincials for then U15 C girl softball teams from around Alberta. 

“There were lots of compliments from the teams about St. Paul hosting and about our umpires. They did a great job,” said Sharon Earl, Softball Alberta Zone 7 District Organizer. 

This was St. Paul’s second year in hosting Softball Provincials as last year they hosted 30 teams.

“There were 10 teams there, from all around the province ranging from Grande Prairie to the north, to Medicine Hat from the south and places in between,” said Earl. 

All Provincial games started Friday, July 28th and teams played till Sunday, July 30th. 

“It was a good tournament and a good weekend,” said Earl. 

St. Paul Storm U15 girls ended their season neck and neck with teams around Alberta. With one win and three losses, the team lost out Saturday in overtime against the Foothills Fury with a score of 11-10.  

“They played well, their games were always close and they were in the battle, but just couldn’t finish it,” said Earl. 

Leduc plays host

The U17 St. Paul Storm, U17 Bonnyville Angels and the U13 Bonnyville Angels were all hosted in Leduc.

The U17 St. Paul Storm girls ended their season at provincials with five wins and one loss, and a silver second-place medal. In the final, a battle of Storms, it was Stettler who pulled away and won 18-10. 

The Bonnyville Angels U13 girls ended their season Sunday at provincials with three wins and three losses. The team lost 19-12 against Camrose Crossfire in their final game. 

The U17 Bonnyville Angels kept close games throughout the weekend, but they lost out Saturday afternoon against the Sherwood Park Storm 16-13.
