Pink Shirt Day reminder to be kind
Today is national Pink Shirt Day, where everyone is encouraged to wear pink to address bullying.
The initiative has become very popular in local school systems in the past decade.
It all began in 2007 in Nova Scotia.
David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
Since then, annually on the last Wednesday of February, pledges are collected by the CKNW Kids’ Fund to charitable children’s organizations.
Bullying persists, but by doing spotlights like this, kids are encouraged to be more kind and empathetic to their peers.
