Onion Lake folds, Canadiens take home games, Ice look to respond
While the first rounds of the NEAJBHL playoffs are underway, one series is already in the books.
The Onion Lake Border Chiefs (7th) have folded after playing just one game against the Wainwright Bisons (2nd) meaning the Bisons will walk to the second round.
The controversial decision cost the first-place Vermilion Tigers a chance to have a bye instead, who are currently up 2-0 in their series vs the Vegreville Rangers.
Onion Lake compiled a record of 3-27-1 during the regular season.
Meanwhile, the St. Paul Canadiens found a double overtime winner from Isaak Watters to win 4-3 and take a 2-0 edge in their series vs the Lloyd Bandits. Both games in the series have been close and decided by one goal.
Ethin Campbell won both starts for the ‘Yens, while Kurtis Labant has found the back of the net on three occasions.
The series resumes tonight at the Centennial Civic Centre. Puck drop is 7:30pm.
The Cold Lake Ice are looking to twist the series back in their favour on home ice tonight as well. Killam has stormed out to a 2-0 series lead after 5-3 and 9-2 wins on Friday and Saturday night.
Three league awards were presented to the Wheat Kings, including goalie Ty Marcinkowski who won Best Goalie and League MVP, while Jordy Gagnon eared Rookie of the Year.
Puck drop is Monday evening at 4:00pm.
In other league awards, Vermilion Tigers head coach Danny Haygarth was presented with Coach of the Year after guiding them to their best record since 2006-07.
