Portage’s men’s and woman’s futsal teams compete in first tournament
Last weekend, 12 men and women’s Futsal teams competed in their first regular season games hosted at Portage College.
A total of 30 games were played to decide which top three teams would advance to the next tournament.
“The games go quick, it is a lot of skill work,” said Jim Knight, Athletic Manager for Portage College.
“It’s been great because it is expanding our futsal division. Four or five years ago we were down to four teams and we pushed to make it one regional event and a championship. Now we have more teams in it, we have grown to six northern teams and six southern teams.”
Despite hosting the tournament, Portage’s men’s and women’s teams failed to qualify for the next meet going winless.
“It’s competitive and good quality soccer,” said Knight.
Men’s and Women’s Futsal championships will be held on March 10 where only the top three teams from each division will compete.
NAIT men’s team is only in their first regular season as a team and already in first place in the northern division going 4-1 and advancing on.
Leading the women’s northern division is TKU standing undefeated at 3-0-2 and will also be moving forward.
