Lac La Biche RCMP October recap

In October of 2022, Lac La Biche RCMP responded to 582 calls for service. 102 of these calls resulted in charges, while 18 remain under investigation. 139 traffic files were generated, 68 traffic tickets were issued and 55 written warnings were issued.

9 impaired drivers were removed from the roads in the Lac La Biche region. 3 Criminal Code impaired investigations were conducted by RCMP and 2 of these resulted in criminal charges. 1 investigation remains ongoing. 6 drivers were issued impaired driving immediate roadside sanctions, with their vehicles subsequently being seized for 30 days and driver’s licences suspended for 90 days.

Of the 582 calls RCMP responded to, more than 54 were reports from community members regarding suspicious persons who were causing damage to property or preventing the enjoyment of the public. Police being aware and responding to these behaviours is what helps us prevent offences that are more serious in nature.

This month, there were 47 reported person’s crimes, which included frauds, assaults, missing persons and uttering threats. 19 well-being checks were conducted on members of our community, and RCMP responded to 14 mental health calls.
October saw a total of 58 property crime related investigations, 13 of which were reported theft of vehicles. RCMP successfully recovered 6 of the vehicles at this time. 27 break and enter investigations were conducted; approximately 1/3 of these were at seasonal properties. RCMP want to remind residents in the community to be diligent in reporting suspicious activity to the RCMP complaint line. Property owners can protect themselves by removing valuables and locking their vehicles, motion sensor lights, and securing high value outdoor items such as ATVs, inside locked garages or outbuildings.

On Oct. 6,2022, Lac La Biche RCMP received a report that a female was en route to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. During the subsequent investigation and with the assistance of St Paul RCMP, a 24-year-old female, a resident of Goodfish, Alta., was located and arrested for multiple firearm offences, uttering threats, and failure to comply with a court order. The accused was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody.

On Oct. 11, 2022, Lac La Biche RCMP entered a drug trafficking investigation following a traffic stop. During the subsequent investigation, 32 grams of suspected cocaine were seized, $9400 dollars, scales, packaging equipment, and weapons were seized from the vehicle. A 33-year-old male, a resident of Lac La Biche, was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was released, with his first court appearance at the end of October.

On Oct. 15, 2022, Lac La Biche RCMP responded to an assault at a licenced downtown establishment. A staff member was assaulted by a patron and then left prior to RCMP arriving. An 18-year-old male suspect has been identified and efforts are ongoing to locate him.

On Oct. 30, 2022, Lac La Biche RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress at a business in the industrial area. On arrival, RCMP located and arrested a 41-year-old male resident of Lac La Biche. The male was transported to RCMP cells and released with conditions to attend court in early December.
