Town of St. Paul receives a 4 Blooms Rating

Last Updated: October 23rd, 2022By

The Town of St. Paul received a rating of 4 Blooms and a special mention for Community Garden during the 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Victoria, British Columbia. The Town of St. Paul participated in the Up to 6,000 Population category along with Chipman NB; Melfort SK and Petitcodiac NB. The community also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the Municipal World WinterLife Award.

Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – regarding the following criteria: Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.

Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Colleen Stockford and Lucy Chang wrote:

“St. Paul has donated a large piece of land for the community garden that accommodates raised beds and in ground beds, a greenhouse, and on-site composting. A local business donated an industrial water tank for ease of watering the beds. The garden is tended by an inclusive community of gardeners that includes newcomers from various regions of the world and who are encouraged to grow produce that are familiar to them from their country of origin. Rows and rows of hilled up soil in the ground plots separated by heavily mulched footpaths introduce a different way of growing vegetables. Tending the plots over the growing season also creates bonds between new gardeners and veteran community gardeners. From field to table, the harvest shared, cooked and eaten in different ways enrich the kitchen and palette of the whole community.”

All those involved in the Communities in Bloom program can be proud of their efforts, benefitting all of society by providing real and meaningful ways to mitigate climate change
