Carjacking at hotel in Bonnyville leads to two men charged

Two local men have been charged after a man was assaulted and had his vehicle stolen last Saturday morning.

Bonnyville RCMP were called at 9:30am about a carjacking in progress in a hotel parking lot on Main Street. Police say that the victim had just parked his SUV and walked out of the vehicle, when a man assaulted him from behind and hopped in the vehicle.

RCMP said the victim watched as his car went across the street and picked up a second person.

Police responded immediately and found the victim walking on the road, who pointed out his vehicle driving away from the scene with the two suspects inside.

The suspects fled as the member tried to pull it over.

Shortly after, RCMP got a call about the same vehicle hitting the ditch near Range Road 460 and Township Road 601A. RCMP attended that scene and located the driver, they said.

Bryce Brertton, 35, from St. Paul was arrested and brought before a Justice of the Peace. He faces charges of robbery, assault with a weapon, flight from police and dangerous driving. He is set to appear in court on November 1st

The passenger, 44 year old Bruce Poitras of Kehewin, has been charged with robbery and possession of stolen property over $5000. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
