Dancing Under the 13 Moons a showcase of Indigenous dance

The new group Lakeland Society for Truth and Reconciliation is hosting its first of two summer performances tonight.

Kehewin Native Dance Theatre is presenting Dancing Under the 13 Moons, which is a showcase event. Over the course of the last few weeks, Indigenous youth have undergone summer dance training.

The dancing matches storylines that center on Tipi and Sky teachings. Local Indigenous youth will spin a web of oral histories and ancient knowledge, that they hope will leave viewers with delight and wonder.

École Notre Dame High School is the venue for the performance, which is free for anyone to attend this evening at 7:00pm.

The Kehewin Native Dance Theatre is touted as Canada’s most celebrated Native Dance Theatre and has been around since 1991.

Eight youth between the ages of 15 to 21 are trained in Native theatre, script development, story creation, Powwow dance, hoop dance and contemporary dance throughout July as part of their program.

The Lakeland Society for Truth and Reconciliation will also host the performance of You used to call me Marie, a Metis love story by Tai Amy Grauman on Thursday, August 4th at St. Louis Parish Centre Hall.

The Savage Society is currently touring the show at Métis Crossing tonight and tomorrow, before going to Kikino on July 30th, and St. Paul on August 3rd. Fishing Lake will have them on August 6th and 7th.
