Fighter Jets secure 1st place with 67-0 drubbing of Fort Mac

This edition of the Cold Lake Fighter Jets is gearing up for a post-season run.

The Fighter Jets have now locked up 1st place in the AFL with their home victory on Saturday, a 67-0 victory over the Fort McMurray Monarchs.

This win, which keeps their season undefeated, means the AFL championship will run through Cold Lake as they will have home field advantage throughout the 2022 playoffs.

“It was our first game since the 25th, so it was nice to get the rust knocked off and Fort Mac travelled light. The team took it as a way to just get back to the basics and stuff and work on some plays that we haven’t had time to the opportunity to work on,” said player/GM Damen Schaub.

“The boys balled out, we’re really happy about that.”

With another big win under their belts, Cold Lake will head to Red Deer this weekend for their final regular season contest.

“We’ll probably be sharing the ball around and no taking them lightly. I’m told that Red Deer does have a good defense, so it’ll be a good time to test some new pass plays and run plays, and tune up for playoffs…making sure guys are healthy and hydrated,” said Schaub.

Since the beginning of the year, the depth of the offensive playbook has grown. From 25 per cent to almost three-quarters of their offensive schemes comfortable with the players, Cold Lake can give opposing defences much different looks.

Regardless of what happens on Saturday, Cold Lake will be home on August 13th, but their opponent has not yet been determined. The top two seeds in the AFL will receive byes.

In the long view, the Fighter Jets though aren’t just competing for a league championship, they want to beat the best out of Ontario as well and claim a national title.

“Whatever comes out of Ontario, it’s going to be hardest competition we’ll see all year. So we got to be ready. We’ve got to make sure the guys don’t get complacent with these other games.”
