St. Paul to host softball and baseball Provincials

St. Paul is saying play ball this weekend and next.

The town is hosting 13U, 15U, 17U Softball “D” Provincials starting today, while 11U, 13U, and 15U Baseball Provincials will get going on June 15th.

President of St. Paul Minor Ball Justin Blackburn said they have hosted some provincial tournaments in the past, but nothing to this extent.

They expect to see 27 teams total for softball and another 15 for baseball.

“Everybody’s really excited. We’re hoping for some for some good weather,” said Blackburn.

“The whole town and a lot of the local businesses have really stepped up to support as well. So that’s really nice to see and we’ll have everybody come together again.”

Visiting teams often compliment Minor Ball on the state of their diamonds, which are kept in tip-top shape by the town staff.

Mayor Maureen Miller highlighted these features in her latest Morning After interview.

“It brings huge impact to our community, and really, I can’t thank the organizers for showcasing this facility. There is six diamonds out here, plus our centerfield and it’s in great shape. It’s great to have people come to our community,” said Miller.

“We know the kids are going to have a blast and come down to watch some great ball.”

On the diamonds, St. Paul teams hope to not just be good hosts, but good sports as well and contend to win the whole thing.

“Our girls teams are top notch for sure. They all went to the Leduc tournament and all got silver or bronze there,” said Blackburn who added that competition was against many teams tiered above them.

“We’ve got some really good softball teams that have a really good chance to bring home gold and all three levels. And then as far as baseball goes, our teams are top notch again there.”

The action begins Friday as opening ceremonies get going at 1:30pm on diamond 5.
