Assumption student to become school French ambassador

Assumption Jr/Sr High School student Faith Donovan has always been passionate about French language, and soon she will be taking her knowledge to a new level.

Faith will spend one week in Regina, Saskatchewan collaborating with 32 other French Immersion students from across the country as they learn how to become French ambassadors for their schools.

The Grade 11 student said the week is dedicated to “learning about French culture and language, as well as how to become a French ambassador and improving your leadership skills.” 

“After the week is over, you become a French ambassador that will promote the language. You’re in charge of creating the activity you had suggested in your school,” Faith said.

As part of her application, Faith had to describe how she plans on promoting French language and culture at Assumption School. Her intention is to start a group where students would take part in weekly French-inspired activities such as sports, games, and movies, among others.

“I know for myself, I like being involved in different activities and extracurriculars,” described Faith. “I thought if we could include a little bit of everything. People could enjoy singing, dancing, watching movies, and games – there will be something for everyone, and hopefully that will intrigue others to come and join.”

In addition to creating a video explaining her group, Faith had to write why she wanted to become a French ambassador for her school, as well as submit a teacher testimonial. 

In the end, her application was enough to land her one of the 33 spots students across the country were vying for.

“When I saw that I had won, I couldn’t believe it,” she expressed. “When I get older I really want to be a French Immersion teacher and specialize in special needs education. I really wanted to get something as good as this camp on my resume. I think when you put your mind to something you can achieve anything.”

Faith has been enrolled in the French Immersion program with LCSD since preschool. She has always been passionate about language and the opportunities available to those who speak both English and French. 

In addition to the skills she will gain while in Regina, Faith is looking forward to the people she will meet.

“Most of the people attending, their first language is neither French nor English… There are a bunch of people who speak a variety of languages that I am excited to learn more about,” she said.

Faith intends on continuing her language learning journey beyond English and French. She said once she attends University, she will likely begin taking sign language courses so she can “help everyone who is in need.”
