Bonnyville Health Centre operating rooms and obstetrics to reopen June 1

Surgeries and obstetrical services are expected to resume at Bonnyville Health Centre on June 1, 2022 at 4 p.m.

The facility’s operating rooms were temporarily closed at the end of April due to damage caused by a water leak. Patients with surgeries scheduled before June 1 have been contacted to postpone their procedures.

A release put on Thursday afternoon said that the operating rooms were anticipated to reopen May 25, but the date was pushed back after the full extent of the water damage was assessed.

Obstetrical patients are encouraged to visit Bonnyville Health Centre when they need care or begin labour so they can be assessed by an obstetrics physician and nurse. Bonnyville Health Centre will then collaborate with hospitals in surrounding communities to arrange for the patient’s safe transportation to the appropriate facility.

If patients require urgent care, they should call 911, Covenant Health says.

Other service areas, including the emergency department, remain open at Bonnyville Health Centre. The South Lakeside parking lot is currently closed off for contractor activities, however visitors may park near the emergency department entrance and ambulance hall.

Alberta Health Services has taken steps to ensure operating rooms and obstetrical teams in surrounding communities are prepared for increased demand resulting from the Bonnyville Health Centre operating room shutdown.
