The Bonnyville Firefighters Association presented their first-ever scholarships awarded to two successful graduates of Station 5’s Junior Firefighter program.

Recipients Sabrina and John will use their scholarships as they continue their education.

“$500 was awarded to each recipient from the Bonnyville Firefighters Association to successful graduates of Station 5’s Junior program,” Coltin Batke Captain at Station 5 said. “It was intended to encourage enrolment to our Junior program as well as help out in encouraging post-secondary education.”

The Junior Firefighter Program was developed for local students aged fifteen to eighteen years old to experience what being a First Responder Fire Fighter entails.

“This program puts the students through both theory and practical aspects of what we do at Station 5,” Station 5 Fire Chief Craig Wenzel told Lakeland Connect. “They learn and experience much of what our firefighters must go through to become certified and qualified firefighters.”

The program is two weekends long and has students learn about things like Fire Theory, Water and Hose Basics as well as Motor Vehicle Collision activities work and Live Fire Training.

Lakeland Connect reached out to the scholarship winners, their reply was not received by press time. However, we would like to say congratulations on this accomplishment and wish you all the best in your post-secondary stories.
