Local basketball teams heading to ASAA Provincials
Teams from Cold Lake and Mallaig are vying for Provincial hardware.
Three local basketball teams from the area are heading to ASAA Basketball Provincials this week.
The Mallaig Stingers girls team will represent the northeast zone in 1A Provincials after winning zones this past weekend. The girls will head to Cremona, roughly 80 kilometres northwest of Calgary. They get the honours of tipping off the tournament Thursday morning at 8:30am as the 9th ranked team against the host school Cremona, ranked 8th.
Meanwhile, Assumption Jr/Sr. High School was doubly successful at zones, with both the girls and boys teams claiming zones banners.
The Crusaders girls team will go farther down Highway 22 to Oilfields High School in Black Diamond for Provincials, southwest of Calgary. They beat Vegreville Composite in the zones final 41-38. The girls are ranked 9th in the 10-team tournament and tipoff at 8:30am Thursday morning against 8th Ecole St. Joseph from Whitecourt.
Assumption’s boys team is heading to Bearspaw Christian School in Calgary for Provincials. Ranked 8th overall heading into the tournament, they will play the 9th ranked John Maland High hailing from Devon. They will also play at 8:30am on Thursday morning.
“We are excited, after having success at our Zone Championship, to represent the North East, Cold Lake, and the Assumption School student body. We are looking forward to competing and playing the best 2A competition the province has to offer in Calgary this upcoming week,” said Shayne Midford, coach for the senior boys’ team, in a press release.
Teams will head down to the Provincials locations on Wednesday. The tournament is bracket style. The championship games are Saturday.
