Canada will send war equipment to help Ukrainians, also bans Russian crude oil
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will send more war equipment to help Ukrainians in their battle against Russia.
Prime Minister Trudeau made the announcement today.
“Today we are announcing that we will be supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons systems and upgraded ammunition,” Trudeau said. “Of course, this is in addition to our three previous shipments of lethal and non-lethal equipment.”
For Ukrainians who want to come to Canada to escape war, Trudeau says the country of Canada is fast-tracking immigration applications.
The PM says he’s discussed elements of the country’s response with other members of the G7. Canadian financial intuitions are barred from any transactions with the Russian Central Bank and a ban is in place here on all imports of crude oil from Russia too. Prime Minister Trudeau announced on Monday February 28 that Canada would be banning all crude oil imports from Russia as sanctions grow due to the invasion of Ukraine.
“This industry accounts for more than a third of Russia’s Federal Budget revenues. And while Canada has imported very little amounts in recent years, this measure sends a powerful message,” Trudeau said.
According to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Canada imported nearly 18,000 barrels of oil per day from Russia in 2019.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has been calling for the ban on crude oil since the invasion of Ukraine began late last week.
Trudeau says Russian President Putin has made a grave miscalculation and that this unnecessary war must stop now.
