St. Paul Fire Department gets new Captain on Crew #2

January 1 officially marked the day of a promotion to the rank of Captain for Brad Williams at the St. Paul Fire Department (SPFD).

Brad has been serving as the Lieutenant of Crew #2 for the last number of years, and will now be taking the helm as Captain Crew 2.

Captain Williams has just celebrated 15 years with the SPFD, and the department looks forward to many more years of service in his new leadership role.

Trevor J. Kotowich is the Fire Chief of the SPFD.

“Captain Williams joined the SPFD on January 1, 2007,” Fire Chief Kotowich told Lakeland Connect. “He served as a front-line firefighter for a number of years before being promoted as Lieutenant on January 1, 2015.”

Fire Chief Kotowich says Captains are charged with organizing and preparing training activities for their crew.

“Serving under a Captain in their crew is a lieutenant and ten firefighters,” Fire Chief Kotowich said. “This is considered a senior leadership position, so many other duties such as equipment inspection and maintenance, fire prevention activities, command of fire and rescue incidents to just name a few are the responsibility of a Captain.”

Captain Williams’s pre-requisites include NFPA 1001 Firefighter certification, NFPA 1041 Instructor certification, and the ability to demonstrate good interpersonal skills. All Officer positions are appointed by the Fire Chief.

“Brad’s hard work ethic, along with his knowledge and skills made him an obvious selection for the vacancy created by retiring Captain Gilles Jean,” Fire Chief Kotowich concluded.
