Multi-vehicle pile up closes Highway 28 near Ashmont

A five-vehicle pile-up yesterday near Ashmont closed Highway 28 for several hours.

Ashmont Fire and Rescue responded at 12:30 p.m., on January 3, to a multi-vehicle pile-up on Hwy 28 between Range Road 115 and 114.

James Preston is the Fire Chief of Ashmont Fire and Rescue.

“Mutual Aid was requested from Mallaig and St. Paul,” Chief Preston told Lakeland Connect. “A total of five vehicles were involved in the collision.”

Ashmont fire extricated two patients from one vehicle, St. Paul and Mallaig assisted in removing a patient from another vehicle.

“Two patients were transported to hospital by EMS crews,” Chief Preston said.

Once all vehicles involved had been removed from the scene, the highway was reopened to traffic a little after 3:00 p.m.

Roads were snowy and ice-covered with whiteout conditions during the time the pile-up occurred.
