Assumption hosts Provincials, Notre Dame girls finish 4th, JR Robson 4th: ASAA Volleyball
Local volleyball teams competed at ASAA Provincials this weekend with the Assumption Sr. high boys hosting 2A Boys Provincials.
Playing on home court, the Crusaders beat Matthew Halton and Holy Redeemer but lost to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir and Calgary Christian, to finish with a 2-2 record, good enough to advance to the quarterfinals. On Saturday morning, Assumption battled, but eventually fell in three sets (25-16, 17-25, 15-10) to La Crete in the quarterfinals.
The upstart JR Robson Marauders from Vermilion, after sweeping the competition in the round-robin, lost to Edmonton Christian in straight sets in the semifinal, before duelling Calgary Christian in a 3-set heartbreaker loss to finish in 4th place. As the northeast zone wildcard team it was a strong performance that knocked on the door of a Provincial medal.
École Notre Dame High School girls also were able to advance to playoff Saturday at 2A Girls Provincials in Taber, going 3-1 through the first two days to finish 2nd in their pool. Against Rimbey in the quarterfinal, they took care of business with a 25-18, 25-12 win to set up a semifinal against Calgary Christian.

After losing in straight sets, the Wildcats emptied the tank against Vauxhall, taking them the distance but losing the bronze medal match in three sets 25-17, 20-25, 15-12. A great season of volleyball capped off this weekend for that group.
E.H. Walter School from Paradise Valley represented the northeast zone in 1A Boys Provincials and put together a strong showing. Going to 2-2 in the round-robin to qualify for the quarterfinals, that’s inevitably where their tournament ended with a 25-16, 25-22 loss to New Norway.
École Des Beaux Lacs travelled to Lacombe for 1A Girls Provincials and although they did not win a set at the tournament, featured just 9 players, three of which in Grade 9. A tremendous effort this season to win the northeast zone banner.
