Volleyball teams battle in Zones, Yaks win pair, Fagnan’s win Loney Bowl: Sports Roundup

Bonnyville brothers shred Bishop’s for Loney Bowl win

On the heels of Silas Fagnan being named the Atlantic University Sport conference Most Outstanding Player, the Bonnyville quarterback led a late game charge for his St. FX team to defeat Bishop’s 25-17 and earn the Loney Bowl’s game MVP. 

Fagnan went 22 for 36 passing for 304 yards on the day, backing his stellar regular season, and finding his favourite target, brother Isaac who hauled in seven receptions for 102 yards. 

Isaac was also named a conference All-Star at the wide receiver position. 

“All year, he’s been like that,” said Isaac Fagnan about his brother to Saltwire. “He’s played with an injury the last couple weeks and that’s been hard for him. It’s taken away some of the things that he can do,” Fagnan said. 

“But he’s just been so focused and has worked so hard.”

St. FX is one of four teams in contention for Canadian collegiate football’s top prize — the Vanier Cup. 

The Xmen will play the number 2 ranked Western Mustangs in the Mitchell Bowl next weekend. 

Volleyball Zones 

Ecole des Beaux Lacs won 1A Girls Volleyball Zones in Plamondon while E.H. Walter from Paradise Valley got the zones title over Ecole Plamandon in 1A boys to punch their ticket to Provincials. 

Ecole Notre Dame High School girls won 2A Volleyball Zones and Assumption Jr./Sr. High won 2A Boys Zones as teams competed for banners this weekend. 

St. Paul’s girls and boys team won silver medals at zones competition in Fort McMurray. The girls lost to Holy Rosary (Lloyd) while the boys fell to MacTavish from Fort Mac. 

ASAA 2A Boys Provincials will be held at Assumption with games beginning this Thursday. However, attendance is closed to the public. 

Pontiacs sweep Grande Prairie

Austin Saint scored a hat-trick and Matt Hennessey turned aside 33 of 35 as the Bonnyville Pontiacs beat the Grande Prairie Storm 6-2, their second win in consecutive nights against the lowly North Division foe. 

Only eight players in the entire AJHL have more goals than Austin Saint this season who has lit the lamp 14 times in 26 games. 

On Friday, the Yaks scored two goals within seven seconds from Ethan Sundar and Alex Atwill to get a 2-0 lead before two minutes had been played and never looked back with a solid 4-1 win. 

Brent Hoshowski played his first AJHL game with the Pontiacs on Saturday as injuries to Sundar and Matteo Giampa left the Yaks shorthanded. Hoshowski looked pretty good in his first ever contest and nearly scored if it weren’t for a toe save from Storm goaltender Aidan Feddema. He has 7 points in 14 games this season with the U18AAA Lloyd Bobcats. 

Bonnyville is now 17-6-3 and 3rd in the AJHL North with 37 points, seven clear of 4th place Drayton Valley, and five behind Fort McMurray for second. 

The Yaks host the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Wednesday at 7pm. They travel to play the Camrose Kodiaks for the first time this season on Friday, before hosting the Fort McMurray Oil Barons for a Sunday matinee at 2:00pm. 

Junior B

The Vermilion Tigers earned two victories, an 8-2 romp over the Lloyd Bandits and a tight 3-2 victory over the Cold Lake Ice to sit fourth in the NEAJBHL table after this weekend’s play. 

Evan Cooke, Ryan Nelson, and Deven Culford got the game’s first three goals for Vermilion, but with just a couple minutes left in regulation Noah Cook and Devon McCormack made the game more interesting with two in twenty seconds to make it 3-2. But that’s where the game ended, Hunter Mader making 33 of 35 saves for the victory. The Tigers are 8-7-2 while the Ice are two points with a 7-8-2 record. 

Meanwhile, the Killam Wheat Kings seized first in the league with a 6-3 win over the St. Paul Jr. Canadiens on Friday. League-leader in points Kobe Charchun scored two goals as Killam potted five unanswered to take control of the game late in the second period. With a win over Lloyd a night later, they know have 23 points for first. 

The Lac La Biche Clippers rebounded after a drubbing to Wainwright to take down the Lloyd Bandits 7-6 on Sunday. The Clips improved to 6-7-1.
